The first year of photography

So it has been 1 year since I took the dive into photography, starting with my Sony A7ii and an 85mm Sony lens, and it is safe to say i have fully fallen down the rabbit hole of this medium! Getting into this has done wonders for me in so many ways, Getting out more, visiting cool places and being a novice in something completely new was a breath of fresh air! And I have stumbled on so many subcategories and niches of the medium, anamorphic, vintage, telephotos and primes all change how I interact with the camera and has really kept things fresh the whole time.

I mainly do street photography and below are some of my most popular photos according to my Instagram. If you like seeing the photos I have posted there near enough daily, head over and follow!

The other element of photography that I did not expect at the start is its ability to get me to travel to cool locations with friends, and in all honesty this has been the best bit, I have spent the past 4+ years being a hermit and not seeing the world but this past year has really opened my eyes and I can't wait to visit more beautiful locations!

1. Luds Church

The first real trip I went on with the camera, I had my mindset on creating a ref pack after hearing Luds Church has been referenced for some of my favorite games such as God Of War 2018.  I also learned a ton, all of my photos were really overexposed so this trip was what tipped me off on how to control the camera in harsh light as up to this point I had primarily shot in nighttime settings.

2. Puzzlewood

I had heard of this location, used in big blockbuster films such as the hobbit and the new StarWars movies. Up to this trip I really didn't like my 35mm, but using it here really opened my eyes to the type of shots that focal length can create and was another huge learning point!

3. Devils Pulpit

For My wife's birthday a group of us took a trip to Edinburgh to visit a bunch of cool locations, one of which was here, Devils Pulpit where the water runs an orangey red.  This was a lot of fun, we had to wade through some water to get some of the shots and Michael Kinsey lent me his 14-24mm, after tasting that kind of focal length I knew I would want one!

4. Lins Jaw

Another location was Lin Jaw waterfall, this one was cool because it was tough to get to. We had to climb across some sketchy fallen trees, down steep mud slides and across the face of rocks to get to a good photo spot, working for a shot like this really added to the satisfaction and makes the image more than a cool photo, it becomes a memory.

5. Gray Mairs Trail

Speaking of working for a shot.... This who location I basically didn't have the right gear...at all. And we decided to scale the mountain when it was already low light and descending in the pitch black was something I never want to do again!

6. Urban Ex: Abandonded manor

I also got my first taste of Urban Exploring this year with Jason Ord when we checked out this abandoned manor. It is a relatively tame first outing into this 'genre' but once I find more locations I 100% want to do this more!

7. Denorwick Quarry

And the last location of the year was to the abandoned slate quarry in Wales, its good we went for 2 days because the first day we went up the wrong mountain/hill. :P
